Garazo Priest

Garazo

Today we visited the village of Garazo a few kilometres east of Perama off the old National Road. Garazo is particularly worthy of a visit because of the religious artwork. The church is only thirty years old and the the priest and his son are seven years into a ten year project painting religious themes on the walls and roof inside the building. It is amazing to see the quality of the work considering that professional artists have not been employed. The priest was taught how to paint by his uncle and now he is passing on the skills to his son. They can have the satisfaction of knowing that their work will be viewed and admired for hundreds of years into the future.

Campanologists will be interested in the two large bell towers each with an amazing collection of large bells.

Outside the church is a pleasant park area with a large water feature and green lawns

There are a couple of large circular pergolas at the edge of the park where visitors can enjoy a quiet drink or light meal from one of the small tavernas after their visit.

Garazo can be reached in less than an hour from either Heraklion or Rethymno.
