The new Potamoi Dam in the Amari valley south of Rethymno is now virtually complete. New roads have been built, the small chapel has been abandoned in favour of the newer one above the waterline, and access to the valley has officially been closed. For the moment there is still limited access to the south side of the dam where the new reservoir is already forming from the streams which continue to flow even at the height of the Cretan summer. This wealth of water, coupled with the relative wilderness of the area, means the edges of the reservoir are already alive with an abundance of wildlife; a nature lovers paradise. A walk along the edge of the lake will disturb all manner of creatures including herons, frogs, and many types of dragonfly.
